As we prepare for the next Earth Hour, was the concept really born out of a recent idea? Or was it unwittingly developed by an inefficient Jamaican electrical company way back in the 1970's?
If the truth be known Jamaica has been experiencing this concept for decades and even today, still have unscheduled "island-wide lights out" approximately twice per year (we have the added glory of "lights-out" for more than 60 minutes). As sad as it is, should we allow anyone else to "steal" our glory? Should we stand-up and show the world that we in Jamaica have been unwittingly saving fuel annually and been a good "Earth Citizen"?
Let's have your input!!!!
A bit of History (as experienced by me) Since the early 1970's the sole electrical supplier at times was unable to satisfy the needs of the country due to faulty generators or staff problems (strikes, etc.). Hence the country or parts thereof would be plunged into darkness or lack of electricty on a massive scale. Over the years improvements were put into place, but power outages are still experienced for hours even in these modern times. Again faulty equipment, bad weather (that we do understand) or lack of proper management has been the excuse of the day.
So, as the nation that possibly (unwittingly) gave birth to this concept of Earth Hour shouldn't we be taking the credit? What do you think. Let's have your input!!!
