The Jamaica government plans to rid itself of the financially-troubled state carrier, Air Jamaica by 2009. Minister in the ministry of finance, Senator Don Wehby, said the carrier has been a strain on the government's budget since it acquired the airline back from private investors in 2004. "We hope to have restructured and divested Air Jamaica by the latest March 2009," Wehby said. He called the decision "difficult politically." The news of the sale comes weeks after the carrier's chief executive resigned after two years on the job. Michael Conway, an American who co-founded America West Airlines and National Airlines, had one year remaining on his contract.
